Are you interested in volunteering for the AAFRO Tutoring Program?
Volunteers are an important part of the Australian African Foundation for Retention and Opportunity organisation.
Volunteering with the AAFRO Tutoring Program provides opportunities to work with newly arrived migrants from Somalia. Volunteers donate three hours a week to help primary and secondary school students with their studies. Tutoring takes place on Saturdays from 9-12midday and the tutoring sessions are held at Debney Meadows Primary School located next to the Flemington High Rise building.


AAFRO tutors develop:
• A greater understanding of the diverse cultures that AAFRO works with
• Great working relationships with like minded people
• Teaching and learning skills that can assist with future employment
• A sense of achievement as they observe their students' progress and achieve their learning goals

Essential Criteria
•Be 18 years old or above
• Willing to undertake a Working With Children Check
• High level English language skills, including grammar and fluency
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a small group of students
• Understanding of the challenges facing students from a non-English speaking background
• Punctuality and reliability
• Initiative and ability to work independently
• An interest in social inclusion and education
• Patience, especially in facilitating student learning
• Willingness to work under the guidance and direction of tutoring program leader
• Ability to establish and maintain clear boundaries in facilitating educational support
• Willingness to travel independently to the AAFRO partner school for volunteering
• Availability for a minimum three hours per week during each week of the program
